View Full Version : Which languages are you learning?

When I went to school, my best subject was English (it's not my native language you know ;) ). I actually was better at it than my mother tongue Dutch. We could choose from a lot of languages to learn: but Dutch and English were both mandatory, we had to learn those, no matter what.

I also took exams in German. I tried to learn French but failed. And there were Spanish classes for those who wanted it.

So, I learned three languages in school. What languages are you learning (or have you learned)?

my main language is italian...I'm trying to learn english, but I don't think I'll make something more than going to school. so my poor english is destined to remain scholastic XD
actually, english is one of my best subjects at school (English and Art) but it's still poor.
I'd looove to learn spanish, it sounds easy for me

I'm learning Spanish right now. I'm in my third year! I learned English and German and I'm like the only person I know who can speak "proper" or High German. A friend of mine taught me how to say "hello" "thank you" "****" and "ramen" in Korean which I use as often as possible! :D I also know a bit of French and Russian, but nothing too serious.

Well, there is a lot to learn about the language you speak daily ;) So it's a good thing that you're learning about it in school.

Just imagine, if people didnt learn anything about languages, we wouldnt be able to post on a forum like this. Well, maybe some of us would understand how to post (they'd have to read the words on the buttons 'reply' and s on...) but would you understand what other people are saying or how to make people understand what YOU are saying?

For instance... would your great-grandmother have know what lolz means....?

I agree with that completely! It bugs me to no end to hear people use chat/net speak outside of the computer. Just imagine how dumb you sound going, "Like, OMG did you see that?" It's really annoying.

I have two ways to speak: One when I'm with friends and stuff, and one when I talk to my parents and other adults because a lot of new terms they don't know or don't know how we use them now.

I do like to annoy my boyfriend by frequently saying 'they're such noobs' or 'Oh noes!'... But I wouldnt use that at work, obviously :P

But the thing is that learning new languages makes it easier for you to communicate with other people, because it helps you understand how language works. That is why I think it is important that you also learn how to speak your native language. You may think you know how to speak it, but if you really want to use your own language to talk to other people in other parts of your country you have to know what the real basic rules are.

For instance, there are plenty of differences between American and British English. Same language? Not completely.

I have to learn German.

Yes, it does. Especially now, if you can't speak a second language, your chances for jobs goes way down. It's unbelievable. Some people don't know how hard it is learning English, or trying to help someone speak it better. I try to teach some of my friends English and they can repeat everything back to me, but if I asked them to use it a sentence, or tell me the meaning of what they just said, they don't know.

I went to England for a day trip and I thought I'd be okay, since I knew some words that meant different things, but I was very wrong. I must've insulted about five people, by accident and I don't even know how I did it. Not to mention that some Ebglish people have very thick accents that made it hard to understand what they were trying to say. Sort of how American's from the south have very thick accents.

I learn French and German! If I'd ran into you, I'd ask if you wanted to speak German to me to see if I could translate! ^_^ I'd go 'Ooh, that accent, it is German, oui?' And then start speaking awful German to you and you'll be like in German 'No, it's I'd like a cookie, not cookie I like muchly you madwoman!' I'm so bad with the word order ToT

well, I know how to speak English & Spanish. Those are my required languages to know in my family. I am still in the process of learning Brazilian portuguese. I can read all three languages, write in English & Spanish, & translate in English to Spanish or vise versa. My Brazilian portuguese vocabulary is very minimum at the moment.

French was compulsory in year 7, so, the basics of that (though i've forgotten most of it, i'm in year 11) i'm learning Japanese now, i have some Latin down and also a little bit of Italian (only from what I picked up from some of my friends) and Spanish (same as Italian - from friends) and i know like one word from German. :D

Japanese, from a Teach-yourself Japenese-American dictonary. Its sort of confusing though, not just the language, but also the way the book is, appearently you could get a tape with the book(according to my mom costs something like $70), so the have the little play sign whenever they have "tape-only parts". I might have to get a notebook just for the dictonary that way I can actually learn Japenese better.

Spanish was one of the languages you could choose to learn at my school. I never had time to take those extra classes, and since we couldnt take final exams in them at the time, I never did learn any :(
