I know that it is unlikely that younger readers have read this book, but Jonathan Safran Foer's novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extremely_Loud_and_Incredibly_Close) gave me something to think about and maybe you guys want to share your opinion about it.
What if a sad man lost the ability to speak? So he has to write down things to talk to people. One day he meets a woman, who is also a bit sad. He was in love with her sister. He talks to this woman the same way he talks to other people: by writing things down. She does say that her eyes are crummy (bad).
Then one day, somehow, he discovers that her eyes are more than crummy: she can't see. She is blind. She has never been able to read his words, he never really talked to her.
How do you think they communicated, if she couldnt read his words?
