Owww, dragging up an old thread, but it is about books, and I am thinking we need to see how much we like to discuss books (and magazines?)

My favourite book, in Dutch, is 'Scheepsjongens van Bontekoe' (Bontekoe's Cabin boys) about 4 young friends around 16-1700 going on a journey to The East (asia/Indonesia). Halfway through the story the boat sinks and they crew have to find a way to land and back home.

In English, it's harder. I have read too many books. In the Young Adult section I'd say the Stravaganza series by Mary Hoffman and His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. In Literature The Time of our Singing by Richard Powers. Very powerful book, especially if you enjoy music.

Magazines? I dont read many, but SFX is probably my most favourite if I have to choose.

Also, I really enjoyed Anthony Kiedis's autobiography, 'Scar Tissue'. I found his story very touching and sad at times. ;~;
