Dusty awoke with a start , he thought he had heard a chatter. He stretched as he slinked out of his crate . He walked sleepily towards the glass slider door and looked out. There sitting on the bird feeder was a grey squirrel. He stood frozen knowing if he moved the squirrel would see him and run away. As the squirrel shoved bird feed into it’s cheeks Sandy, Dusty’s sister came trotting towards the door.
“Shhh,” Dusty whispered. Sandy came to a halt. Dusty turned his head and looked out the window. The squirrel was looking at the two dogs. It turned sharply and ran to a tree and scrambled up it.
“See what you did!” Dusty said angrily. Sandy scoffed .
“Like you were actually going to get outside and chase it.” She said nastily.
“I could’ve waited for Leah.” He snapped.
“Yeah and when the squirrel saw her it would run away.” She snapped back. Dusty was annoyed and decided to walk over to his food bowl and eat. As he did Sandy trotted down the hall towards the stairs and went up them. As Dusty ate his dog food he heard his owners stir above head. Soon Leah would be off to school and Dave to work. Just as he was done his food, Leah came down the stairs.
“Hey DB.” She called. DB that’s what my nickname is. It stands for Dusty Busty, some other stupid name they call me. I bet I have a hundred different ones.
Behind Leah came Sandy making clicking noises as she ran across the tile floor.
“Do you wan’ t to go outside Sandy?” Leah asked her as she walked towards the slider door and opened it. “How about you Dust?” As she asked I trotted over and walked out the door. The air was cool, and foggy. Sandy walked over to her usual spot on the grass near the little strip of garden. Dusty sniffed the air. But no unusual smell came through.
As usual that cop car went up Phoenix’s driveway [Phoenix is our neighbor] and again Sandy barked. Leah came outside and yelled, “Sandy shush!” Sandy looked around and gave her a smile.
“Kiss up.” Dusty mumbled. Sandy turned in a circle then laid down.
In a few minutes Leah was out the door and at the bus stop. Five minutes later Sierra and Phoenix walked down there long drive way and Sandy barked again. “Oh jeez here she goes again” Dusty thought . Another breeze came through, this time with the smell of a deer. Dusty ran to the fence barking and howling. Sandy followed.
