It had been a summer fling. It wasn’t meant to be serious, but neither Gemma nor Joe could stop cupid from shooting his arrow. It had started with casual flirting while Gemma was visiting the near by beach.
She sat on a towel, sunning herself. She was close to burning when a shadow was cast over her bronze body. Gemma opened her eyes, to find the cute boy at the bar she spotted earlier standing over her smiling.
She sat up quickly, smiling sexily.
“And I can help you how…?” she asked, looking up into his beautiful blue eyes.
“Well, I couldn’t help but notice you looking a bit hot, and was wondering if you would want a swim with me.” Gemma smiled, looking him up and down.
He was like a Greek god, with a tanned toned stomach and generally good looking.
“Alright then, I’m sure a swim wouldn’t hurt. Help me up please,” she said, holding up a hand. Her hand tingled delightfully at his touch.
They started along the golden beach, heading towards the sparkling blue sea that stroked the shore in gentle waves.
“So, what is your name then?” she asked, dipping her toes into the water. It was mighty cold.
“Joe. Please don’t tell me your one of those squealing girls, who shrieks at a bit of cold water.”
Gemma laughed.
“I’m Gemma, and what if I am? What would you do about it?” she replied, flicking a bit of water at him with her toes.
“This,” he said, lunging at her, hauling her over his shoulders and ducking her into the cold sea water.
Gemma shrieked and screamed, jumping up and pushing Joe in a light-hearted manner.
It was from that moment that a beautiful friendship blossomed, which soon bloomed into an even more beautiful relationship.
If you stayed at the beach at sunset, you would see a young couple walking along the beach, or if you went to the market place, you would spot two teens messing around, in fact where ever you went you would see Gemma and Joe together, joint at the hip.
You would never see one without the other.
Until, that was, half way through the summer break. Gemma sat on the brick wall, knees tucked up under her chin. She stared out to the ocean, watching the distant surfers as they rode the waves.
She had called Joe the other day, but had been answered with a curt “Sorry I’m busy.” Recently, Joe had been acting strange. He became withdrawn; he wouldn’t speak to Gemma as much or go out. He had even stopped speaking to her as much.
Tears rolled down her cheeks, as she remembered the last time she had seen Joe. Sure, it had only been a couple of days, but to Gemma, it had seemed like forever.
She thought back to there last proper conversation. Gemma and Joe had been laying on the sand, watching the stars, when Gemma turned to him and said, “You’ll never leave me will you?”
Joe had glanced at her bemused, shaking his head.
“I will always be here,” he answered, kissing her gently.
“Promise?”
“I swear by heaven and hell, I will never leave your side.” he had then cupped her face in his hands, and kissed her passionately.
Gemma sniffed heavily, wiping her nose on the back of her head, fearing the worst. What if Joe didn’t love her? What if Joe hated her? What had she done? What did she do wrong? Was it something she said or did? What it-?
Her sorrowful thoughts were interrupted by the sharp buzz of her mobile phone vibrating.
“Hello?”
“Oh my, Gemma is that you? Something terrible has happened to Joe!” Gemma felt her world shatter all around her, the sharp shards digging into her soft skin.
“What? What has happened?” she stuttered, unable to contemplate what had happened.
“We don’t know love, but he went into shock or something. he has always had severe heart problems, but recently its been out of control, this might be the cause. We’re driving to the hospital now; do you want us to pick you up?”
Gemma shakily told them were she was, and put down the phone.
Something had happened? How could that be? Gemma felt like someone had wrapped a barbed wire around her heart, and was slowly tightening it, ripping it to shreds.
The ride to the hospital passed in a big painful blur, and once in the hospital, Gemma rushed to Joe’s bedside.
Gems cried out in shock at the sight of her poor boyfriend laying, pale and withdrawn in a bed. He looked so small, so helpless. Tears dripped down her cheeks, in a hot rush.
“Gemma?” he croaked, holding out his hand, “I’m sorry.” Gemma took his hand, quietly shushing him.
“Don’t speak, save your energy.” She stroked his air, but Joe shook his head.
“I won’t make it. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you, and that I just ignored you. I’m so sorry-,” he said tears dribbling down his face.
“No, don’t…don’t say that, Joe. Stay with me. Joe, please,” Gemma begged, barely able to pronounce her words.
“I love you Gemma, but recently my heart has got worse. I won’t survive. I know it. Just know I love you.”
“Joe, no. don’t say that. You’re gonna make it. Joe, please, stay with me, don’t give up!” Gemma pleaded, but she was too late. Joe’s hand fell limp, and his monitor flat lined. The low long beep reverberated around Gemma head, the horrific death call.
“Joe!” she screamed, tightening her grip on his hand. “Joe! Wake up, please wake up! Joe, please, come back. I need you.”
Gemma sunk to the floor, a cascade of tears pouring out of her blood shot eyes, as her heart felt like it had been ripped out and poked with boiling needles.
“JOE!” she shrieked, “Joe!! COME BACK!” she raked her fingers through her hair, barely registering the strong arms heaving her out of the room, while the nurses pronounced his death.
Gemma, abruptly over come with anger ran out of the hospital, ignoring the shouts of Joe’s parents.
She ran blindly, not knowing where she was going. A head of her, Gemma saw the cliffs. She scrambled up them, perching herself on the very edge.
“YOU DIDN’T KEEP YOUR PROMISE!” she screamed to the heaven's, a fresh wave of tears washing over her. “YOU SAID YOU WOULD ALWAYS BE HERE! YOU PROMISED ME YOU WOULD NEVER LEAVE! YOU LIED! YOU LIED! YOU GAVE UP!”
She cuddled her knees rocking slightly. Pain was over bearing, she couldn’t see, she couldn’t feel anything other then pain, she couldn’t touch or smell.
All she could feel was the pain that was enough to kill her. It was ripping her up inside, she could feel the tears and rips.
“You said you’d be there, but you lied!” was all she could mutter, repeating it over and over, with out realising who was by her side.
A dark shadow, her beloved Joe, was watching over her, tears in his eyes. How could he have caused her so much pain?
He silently placed a silver chain beside Gemma, and materialized into the darkness.
Gemma looked up at the sudden gust of wind, her hair whipping around her face. She looked down at her hands, her eye sight blurred by tears.
In the setting sun, Gemma saw something glinting silver. Confused she looked down, and saw a silver chain with an angel pendent.
She smiled despite herself; she knew who it was from. Tears trickled down her face, as she turned it over, looking at an inscription on the back.
‘I love you Gemma, forever and always.’
Gemma clutched it to her heart, standing up and looking over the beach from her high view.
She gasped in shock, for there written below in the sand where the words:
‘I’m The Angel By Your Side, And Always Will Be.’
