Emo is suppposedly a genre of rock music that is related to melodic hardcore but originated from hardcore punk and pop punk; although some people who are fans of this particular type of music are calling themselves "emos". It seems that they have given themselves a rather bad reputation; as many had said before me, they are generally viewed as people who enjoy self harm and hates their life.
...I don't believe that emo is a word, though. It seems much more like an abbreviation to me.

To me, the phrase "emo" denotes a genre of music, and only music. The whole emo stereotype fad is no more than fecal waste excreted by male bovines to me.
